Don't you love it when just a single page of a new quilting book makes your imagination get busy? With Gayle Bong's "S Is For Scraps - 18 Great Quilts", I looked at only one of the 18 projects and I was already mentally selecting fabrics and imagining various color combinations.(Please note that while, at the time of this writing, the Amazon Product Description indicates "16 Great New Designs", there are in fact a total of 18 REALLY great designs.)
This new book has a LOT of varied features:
1) Basic shapes like simple squares, rectangles, and strips
2) Triangles in lots of formations (quarter-square, half-square, Flying Geese, bias-square, hourglass, equilateral, and, yes, even more)
3) Less familiar shapes like trapezoids, diamonds, and kites
4) Several very elemental entry-level or "My First Quilt" projects
5) Lots of intermediate-to-advanced designs (but no curves)
6) Traditional (mostly) and contemporary (a couple) design styles
7) Advanced joining techniques such as partial seams and set-in seams
8) 2 uniquely Bong techniques: Thirtysomething and Twin Peaks (each technique actually has its own book by Ms Bong)
I have two other books from Ms Bong: "Save The Scraps - Great Quilts From Small Bits" and "Trouble Free Triangles". So I already knew two noteworthy things about this talented author: she loves triangles and she loves scraps.
Yet Bong's latest book taught me some new things about triangles. Triangles are pretty simple, right? 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 angles, no? Well, Ms Bong demonstrates the importance of knowing which side is the bias side and which is the straight-grained edge; this makes all the difference in the cutting AND the piecing. Half-square and quarter-square triangles may look the same in terms of shape, but they differ in the location of the straight-grain edge . This important fact also gets to the root of why you need one ruler to cut half-squares and a different one for quarter-squares. (And this could explain a few things about some less-than-successful projects I have in the closet.)
For my first project from this book, I am debating between:
1. "Box Boy", which features a very clever 4-pointed star formed from trapezoids and is extra scrap-friendly in that it uses joined 1.75" strips. Ms Bong does a nice job of explaining partial seams with this project.
2. "Ahead Of The Game", which is a perfect showcase for Moda's Rite Of Spring fabric line. (And one I have been collecting for a long time.) It is a basic medallion layout, but it becomes extraordinary via concentric turns of the setting.
Other projects run the gamut from very elemental with no triangles to more advanced with set-in seams. "Make Momma Happy" is a sneaky snowball block that looks like spools , "Twin Peaks Towers" is a basic strippy quilt, and "Midnight Express" is a pseudo-hopscotch design with 9-patch blocks turned on point. The project on the cover is "Vintage LeMoyne Stars"; in another review I swore I would learn how to do y-seams better, and this project might actually inspire me to do so. It is such a classic block and they look so nice all in a row, end to end, and bordered by even more LeMoyne stars.
Just so you know, all the projects here are lap/wall-size or larger. The smallest project finishes to 42.5x42.5 inches and the largest is 82.5 by 94.5 inches.

If you are a scrap quilter you will love this book. Lots of great ideas and good clear instructions. A must for any quilters library.
I am very happy with this book. Glad that I was able to preview it before purchasing. Her tips and techniques were new to me, and made me look at making scrap quilts as easier to make decisions on where to put the color values, instead of just randomly putting squares together. That was my problem before - then the quilts would look jumbled and not pretty. My eyes had no where to rest. Great book.
