A passionate love affair across three continents and three decades, swirling in the mists of the British miners' strike, the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa and the fight against Islamic fundamentalism. Two lovers are caught in the machinations of the secret services of four countries, their lives torn apart in the interests of global strategy and the war against terror. This is the story of how their love proves timeless and without limit as they finally refind themselves and are freed from the terrible injustice inflicted upon them. Their love is triumphant, even as the struggle for peace and justice in the world limps on.

Tim Lewis has created a masterpiece of suspense. The framework he used to encompass the telling of his story is unique in my experience, and kept me reading and reading to unravel the secret of the novel's structure.Lewis has managed to take his characters through three different major situations of our modern world -- British labor unrest in the Thatcherite era (the NUM coalfield strike of 1984-85), the final days of apartheid in South Africa, and jihadist extremism in India and beyond -- without striking a false note. How his characters find themselves in these struggles, and how they move from one to the other, is thoroughly believeable.
As one who likes a lot of action and not too much introspection in his novels, in this case I beame deeply involved in the protagonists' relationship with each other. I found myself rooting for tham all the way through. And there was enough action to keep me enthralled.
Lewis has lived in the places he writes about, and knows whereof he speaks first hand. Anyone who buys this book will enjoy hearing his voice. (And finding out what happens to bit player Rush Limbaugh in the end.)
